When you have high blood pressure and are shopping for life insurance, it can feel a little overwhelming.

But it doesn’t have to…

It is possible to buy an affordable life insurance policy, even when you have hypertension.

About Transamerica

Transamerica is one life insurance company to consider.  As a financially strong company with humblest of roots, Transamerica was founded in 1904 in San Francisco, California.  OriginallyTransamerica hypertension term life insurance known as the Bank of Italy, in 1906 they issued bank loans ‘on a handshake’ to help local residents recover after the now infamous earthquake that destroyed eighty percent of the city.

Since serving its first customers off the docks of San Francisco, Transamerica has grown into a company that for over a century has helped people secure their financial futures.  They now enjoy some of the industry’s highest ratings for financial strength and performance, including an A+ rating from A.M. Best.

Owned by the parent company, Aegon, they make a wide range of financial products and serve more than twenty million people.  Their life insurance policy offerings include:

  • Term Life
  • Whole Life
  • Universal Life
  • Variable Universal
  • Accidental Death
  • Final Expense Life

How Transamerica Considers Blood Pressure

Transamerica life insurance rates are established by how they view your entire health picture.   For those with high blood pressure, they will judge your current and future health risks.

High blood pressure increases stress on the heart and is a leading cause of death.  Left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems, such as:

Individual rates are determined by assigning you to a health class.  To assign the class, they will establish if the high blood pressure is considered primary hypertension or secondary hypertension (caused by an underlying medical condition, such as an aorta defect or kidney disease).

The underwriter will also examine your blood pressure readings over the past twelve months.  If the readings are below the maximum thresholds, the rate will be lower.  If they are above, you may still buy life insurance but at substandard rates established, using what is known in the industry as, Table Ratings.

In addition, Transamerica underwriters will examine the prescription medications you are taking.  No blood pressure medications are permitted for those under age 50 or over age 80.  You are permitted to buy life insurance if you take blood pressure medication if you are between the ages of 50 and 80.

The lowest rate classes may be offered if both systolic and diastolic levels are below the thresholds outlined below:

Preferred Plus

135/85 up to age 70

145/85 age 71 +

145/85 up to age 70

150/90 over age 70

Standard Plus

148/88 under age 70

152/88 over age 70

As you can see by the above thresholds, life insurance rates for people with high blood pressure are directly related to how controlled the blood pressure is and age.  Since Transamerica is in the business of judging risk, they are very concerned about your current and future health.

  • Follow the treatment plan prescribed by a doctor
  • Follow a heart-healthy diet
  • Reduce sodium intake

  • Exercise
